After a few difficult games, Dronfield picked up a win on the road today to boost confidence going into the final stage of the season.
We'd lacked energy and competitiveness across the squad over the last few weeks; the target today was to win the small battles, in particular staying alert to 50:50 opportunities and winning the race to the ruck.
On a very small pitch, the game was contested and busy for the forwards, with very little room to move the ball to space.
The boys certainly won the physical battle in the tight, George winning several turnovers at hooker, and Tommy dominating the close quarter collisions.
Owen put in a great shift in the wider channels gaining several turnovers, and Charlie again with another organised and energetic role at 9; a great threat from the base. Henry led the team well from the back, being well positioned to receive the many clearance kicks from Chesterfield. His highlight, showing the desire and workrate to get under Charlie's kick off (see video below) which resulted in a try.
The game was not a classic by any stretch, but the boys did what needed to be done. Ironically, we played far better rugby in our loss to Dinnington, but today was all about energy and small wins. On that, the boys delivered.
A comprehensive 18-2 win today, and plenty of smiles from both sides.
Stars today:
Olly. Back on form today and picked some fantastic lines to break the gainline, particularly from scrum and free pass. He put in some good passes to release our edge players and use the width.
Cole: great to see Cole with ball in hand and threatening the edges. He made 2 significant breaks which put us on the front foot and resulted in tries.
Tommy: 2 very dominant tackles today, but better still, got up immediately and contested for the ball. We have talked about staying in the fight over the last few weeks, and Tommy showed that energy in contact.
Well done lads. Winning ways again.
